5 Versatile Styling Ideas for a Button Down Shirt

One of the most versatile pieces I have in my closet is a classic button down shirt. If you follow me on Instagram, you’re familiar with my Top 8 Pieces series, where I’ve been highlighting the pieces that I find most foundational, versatile, and essential to building a capsule wardrobe.

So it’s hardly a surprise that a button down made the list!

In the past year I’ve found some great button down options thrifting, but I love the one shown in this post because it takes a classic silhouette and adds a bold stripe, which is very trendy. Because of my love for stripes, I know this piece will last a long time in my closet!

You can see the details of my current favorite button down here.

How I Style It:

  • 🤎 open, worn as an outer layer
    🤎 partially buttoned, partially tucked
🤎 fully buttoned, worn as an inner layer
    🤎 fully buttoned, tucked in
🤎 2 buttons used for a casual look

Just a few years ago, I didn’t like wearing button down shirts at all. It really took practicing + styling them to learn what I do and don’t like. Here are a few things I’ve learned:

-Rolling the sleeves always feels right

-Playing with how many buttons to button helps take the shirt from casual to more polished

-Styling takes practice, so try different things and take pictures if it would help you

-Thinking of it as a layer helps me see the versatility and new ways to wear it

A button down shirt also comes in handy for late spring and early summer! Here are a few ways to style it for warmer weather:

What do you think? Are you already a big fan of button downs or does this give you some new ways to try one out? Let me know!
